INTERNATIONAL STUDENT SUCCESS STORY

Kiara is pictured with her Modern History teacher, Mr Rod Hamilton

The Gaythorne RSL Sub-Branch Inc. recently conducted an essay competition for school students on the topic “What Remembrance Day means to me.”

We at Ferny Grove State High School were very pleased when Kiara Sobina, a Year 11 Modern History student who is an International student from Germany, offered to enter the competition. We were even more delighted to learn that Kiara was successful in winning the Senior section of the competition. For her outstanding work Kiara received a certificate and a $200 prize, as well as a cheque for $300 for the school library.

Kiara wrote a most impressive essay, in which she demonstrated her knowledge of the history and nature of the Australian commemoration, as well as describing the way in which similar commemorations are conducted in her home country.

The success of an international student in such a venture says much for the program and demonstrates just how we can progress international cooperation and understanding.
